J.L. Creasy, Dating Neurological Injury: A Forensic Guide for Radiologists, Other Expert Medical Witnesses, and Attorneys, DOI 10.1007/978-1-60761-250-6_2, © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract This chapter begins with a discussion of the terminology and hardware of computed tomographic (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), and ultrasound (US) imaging. This includes an introduction to CT numbers and very basic MR image formation, sequence types, and sequence usages. The remainder of the chapter is an introduction to edema and hemorrhage. The two basic types of edema are cytotoxic and vasogenic. The appearance of these types of edema is presented on CT, MR, and US. The general imaging of hemorrhage – without following in detail the evolution of these findings with time – and the various spaces in which it occurs in the brain are discussed and demonstrated on CT, MR, and ultrasound.

I-41: Imaging Strategy for Diagnosis of Adnexal Masses Including US,CT Scan and MRI

Adnexal masses are spectrum of diseases from benign non neoplastic and neoplastic masses to malignant neoplasms. Endovaginal ultrasonography (US) is the fisrt and invaluable modality for assessment of adnexal masses because it is available and has a high negative predictive value. Important morphologic features are solid (vascularized) tissue, vascular and thick septations, and papillary projec...

Generating the synthetic CT (sCT) and synthetic MR (sMR: sT1w/sT2w) images of the brain using atlas based method

Introduction: Radiation therapy planning (RTP) is one of the clinical applications in which both CT scan and MRI are used. MR and CT images are applied to determine the target volume and calculation of dose distribution, respectively. In addition, using two imaging modalities increases the department workload and cost. In this study, an algorithm was presented to create synthet...

Generating Synthetic Computed Tomography and Synthetic Magnetic Resonance (sMR: sT1w/sT2w) Images of the Brain Using Atlas-Based Method

Introduction: Nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in combination with computed-tomography (CT) is increasingly being used in radiation therapy planning. MR and CT images are applied to determine the target volume and calculate dose distribution, respectively. Since the use of these two imaging modalities causes registration uncertainty and increases department w...

Comparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

MR imaging of brain contusions: a comparative study with CT.

Ninety-eight brain contusions in 17 patients served as a data base for a comparative study of MR and CT for defining brain contusions. MR was the more sensitive technique, detecting 98% of the brain contusions compared with only 56% by CT. CT was slightly better for showing hemorrhagic components, documenting 77% of hemorrhages compared with 71% for MR. The appearance of the contusions on MR wa...
